Title
Incomplete Early Roman, first century toilet set made of copper alloy. Ear scoop and nail cleaner.
Description
English: Incomplete ?cast copper alloy toilet set of probable Roman, first century date. The set consists of a nail-cleaner, an ear scoop and part of the circular ring that the implements were suspended from.

About 1/3rd of the suspension loop survives. This is sub-rectangular in cross-section. It can be estimated that the external diameter of the ring, when complete, would have been 15mm and the internal diameter would have been 12mm. Thickness 1.6mm. Weight of the surviving part, 0.15g. The ring is in poor condition and suffers from bronze disease. The find has been varnished.

The nail cleaner is flat and has a sub-circular suspension loop which is in the same plane as the shaft. Length 45mm, maximum width 8mm and 1.5mm thick. Weight 1.54g. The suspension loop is broken in two places but is complete. These breaks are modern. The external diameter of the loop is about 9mm and the internal diameter is 2mm. Below the suspension loop the shaft is "waisted" before the sides flare into an swollen portion of the shaft. The sides then converge inwards to form a parallel section, about 23mm in length. At the terminal there is an inverted V-shaped notch and the two points either side of the notch are broken and missing. These breaks are old. A tapering groove along the centre-line of the shaft extends from just below the swollen part of the shaft to the notch at the terminal. This groove gets deeper as it nears the notch. The front is decorated. Below the suspension loop there are six horizontal grooves close together and on the swollen part is a cross saltire. Both the horizontal lines and the cross saltire appear to have been engraved. The rear side of the piece is plain. The nail cleaner is in poor condition as has suffered form bronze disease. The find has been varnished.

The ear scoop is similar in shape to that of the nail cleaner and has similar decoration. Length 42mm, maximum width 6.5mm and 1.3mm thick. Weight 1.03g. Only part of the suspension loop survives. The break is old. On the waist, below the suspension loop, there are five horizontal grooves which are close together and the swollen part of the shaft has a cross saltire similar to that of the nail cleaner. On the front, along each side of the parallel part of the shaft, between the swollen part and the cupped scoop, there are a series of small, possibly engraved, notches. It is possible that there was more notched decoration along the sides that has now been lost due to corrosion. The end of the cupped scoop is broken and missing and the break is old. The reverse side of the piece is plain. This find has been varnished.
