She hadbelonged to a secret society unknown to her husband, andon the violent death of Alexander II., in 1881, it wasnecessary for her to flee the country. Years passed, and,altering her appearance, she returned to Russia, trustingthat matters had quieted down. The police, however,arrested her on suspicion, and casting about for somemeans of proving her identity, they hit upon a brilliantand most cruel test.
