Text Appearing Before Image: by hydraulic pressure of 200pounds per square inch, which is maintained untiltwenty-one to twenty-two pounds of the mixture hasbeen absorbed by each cubic foot of the wood. This is followed, in another cylinder, by hot milk-of-lime under the same pressure, in order to fix and setthe creosote, so that the blocks, when ready for use,present a peculiarly solid appearance. 79 CITY ROADS AND PAVEMENTS. The blocks are then laid, with the grain vertical,upon a one-inch cushion of screened sand, covering asix-inch concrete base; the blocks are driven tightlytogether at every sixth row and are rolled with a five-ton steam-roller until a firm, uniform and unyieldingsurface is made, when the whole is covered temporarilywith one-quarter inch of clean screened sand. COST. The cost of this pavement, complete, including asurety company ten-year guarantee, for blocks fourinches deep on concrete six inches deep, varies withthe local conditions from $3.10 to $3.50 per squareyard. 80 VITKIFIKI) r.RICK.
