Thevaluable work of these devoted women, and of someothers unnamed here who were permitted to give buta short term, challenges the admiration of the church.In addition to these, worthy Mexican teachers, Biblewomen, deaconesses, and nurses have loyally servedthe cause in various departments. Text Appearing After Image: M H[H H M oo ^*<o M H o W H H toO ij oo a o la o CHAPTER VI MISSION EXTENSION, PACHUCA ANDVICINITY Pachuca, capital of the state of Hidalgo, is aboutsixty miles northeast of Mexico City. It was thefirst town of importance to which our work was ex-tended. The mountains which rise so ruggedly onthree sides of the city suggest impregnable militaryfortifications. These mountains are full of rich veinsof silver, a fact discovered by Cortes four hundredyears ago. Silver is Mexicos chief mineral product,and she has furnished one third of all that preciousmetal now in the markets of the world. The churchesin this land are rich with magnificent silver altarsand railings, yet this lavish display is rebuked by thegeneral poverty and ignorance of the masses. Bishop Haven was the first Methodist minister towalk the streets of the quaint city, though not thefirst Methodist. Wesleyans from Cornwall had pre-ceded him, and he found a class meeting which hadbeen held in the home of Mr. Richard Rule,
