Text Appearing Before Image: tween the lamas and theChinese Authorities in Chinese-controlled Tibet. What has so far been written on the subject of the ethnography ofEastern Tibet is largely taken from the cursory reports of passing travellers, and is not to be relied on. Thus an excellent and invaluable compendium offacts concerning China, The China Year Book (1919 edition), devotes a fewpages to the races of the Chinese-Tibetan border, basing its information ona well-known geographical work, and gives, inter alia, die following namesof Mongoloid Tibetan races: SofAa, Horpa, Bodpa, Drokpa, Chakba, Kampa,Changpa, and so on. But these are not really the names of races at all, butare Tibetan words meaning Mongols, TurMs, Tibetans, nomads, robbers, men of Kam, men of the North. Thus a passing traveller is told that suchand such a region is inhabited by Chakba (robbers), or that some horsemenseen in the distance are Chakba, and he promptly writes down the word inhis note-book as the name of a Tibetan tribe.
