Had our plan been carried out even inthe smallest part by HighRocKPeak* on June Z7 Observed^^Snowfield^ a cursory survey ofwhat lay ahead, Ishould not now haveto teU a story whichis lamentably incom-plete ia one respect. For the East Rong-buk Glacier is oneway, and the obviousway when you seeit, to the North Col.It was discovered byMajor Wheeler be-fore ever we saw it,in the course of hisphotographic sur-vey ; but neither he,nor Bullock, nor Ihave ever traversedits whole length. We should haveattached more im-portance, no doubt, in the early stages of reconnaissance, to the East RongbukGlacier had we not been deceived in two ways by appearances. It had been an early impression left in my mind, at all events,by what we saw from ShOing, that a deep valley came downto the East as the R.G.S. map suggests, draining into theArun and having the North-east arete of Everest as itsright bank at the start. Theidea that a glacier running parallel to the Rongbuk startedfrom the slopes of Everest itself and came so far to turnWestward in the end hardly occurred to us at this time. From anything we had seen there was no place for such aglacier, and it was almost unimaginable that the greatmountain range runnmg North from the North Col, Chang La,was in no part a true watershed. We saw the East RongbukGlacier stretching away to the East and perceived also abay to the South. But how, if this bay were of anyimportance, could
