It is consideredan important point owing to its position at the junction ofseveral roads. September 11. At De-ge Gonchen. Leaving Kargung on September 7, we made a very longmarch down the valley of the river, here called the Dzin Chu.For the first half of the journey the valley is open and theroad good; but for the second half the river flows throughnarrow forested gorges, and the trail, a rough footpath ob-structed by rocks and fallen trees, is as bad as it can be. Theriver has to be crossed and recrossed several times by rottenwooden bridges, the destruction of which would render theroad impassable in summer. To compensate for the badnessof the road, the scenery, made up of foaming torrent, pineforests, and rocky limestone mountains, is unsurpassed evenin this country.
