On August 8 and 9 we had another two days feasting incelebration of the ist day of the 7th Moon, a festival all overTibet and Mongolia. On the first day a theatrical perform-ance was held, starting at eight in the morning and finishingat dusk. The stage was an open piece of ground in front ofthe Kalon Lamas house and the players were Tibetansoldiers. We watched the play from the windows of theKalon Lamas apartment, conversing and consuming lightrefreshments between the morning and evening banquets.The players refreshed themselves at frequent intervals withcopious draughts of chang provided by the Kalons stewards;so that their acting became more and more energetic as theday wore on. Tibetan plays are either religious or lay. Of the former,which are performed by lamas and are often called DevilDances by foreigne
