WhenChao Erh-feng took over De-ge State, the younger of thetwo brothers who were then contending for the Chieftainshipfled north into Seshii and took refuge with the Dzongbonand the lamas here^. While sitting in my room at Seshii Gomba this afternoon,a great hubbub arose amongst the lamas outside the monastery,accompanied by shots and blowing of trumpets. Going outto investigate, I saw a dozen or so armed horsemen drivinga mob of ponies across the plain towards the Yalung. Itappeared that the horsemen were Golok brigands from acrossthe Yalung engaged in a raid, and that the herd of poniesthey had lifted belonged to the stock of the monastery. Atthe request of the lamas we joined them for some time intaking long shots at the raiders, in the hope of inducing thelatter to relinquish their prey, while others amongst themonks held a special service, but with no better results. ^ See p. 26.
