Text Appearing After Image: VALLEY LEADING DOWN INTO TIBETAN COUNTRY ON THE REVERSESLOPE OF THE SAME RANGE I AT TAINING: A TIBETAN TEA PARTY 61 narrow ravine through more pine forests, and finally over asmall pass and down the other side into an open valley. Taining consists of a large monastery and a small villagelying in the middle of a treeless valley plain, probably an oldlake basin. In winter the scene much resembles the westernhills at Peking, a bleak, dusty and windswept landscape. Themonastery (Gelugba sect, three or four hundred lamas) iscalled Gata Gomba. In the central temple are statues of twoformer Dalai Lamas. One was a native of the locality; theother was deposed by the Chinese and interned in this neigh-bourhood. When we called, the lamas were making readyfor some religious ceremony by preparing intricate patternsof coloured sand, the usual wheels and other devices, on thefloor of the temple, the sand being poured out of hollowtubes in a very ingenious way.
