The childrenare occupied with a white ring-dove which is seen on the ground, aboutto enter a large birdcage. This picture and its companion piece (No.180) are known as the Empress Eugenie Panels, having beenpainted by her order for one of the apartments in her private suitein the Palace of the Tuileries. American: 1847— 182 —MOONLIGHT The horizon in this fine composition is placed low, about one-quarterof the total height of the canvas from the bottom of the frame. Apond, or stream, is seen in the immediate foreground with steep bankson either side, while on the farther shore, where a brook tumbles intothe main body of water, are several trees and, beyond, a hilly countryoccupies the distance. From the high bank on the right rise two great trees with foliagereaching to the toj) of the canvas, and on the left is a smaller tree,farther away from the spectator. The sky, light and pearly in tonein the lower portion, fades into blue and still darker blue as the eyelooks upward.
