Himalaya - Changing Landscape

English: Imja Glacier in the 1950s. An impressive layer of ice covered the Imja glacier in the 1950s. Thick ice falls down. However, even in the 1950s small meltwater ponds could be seen in and around the glacier. Over the next fifty years, these ponds continued to grox and merge, and by the mid 1970s had formed the Imja lake. Photo: Erwin Schneider, Khumbu, Nepal, 1956 - 1961. Deutsch: Imja Gletscher in den 50er-Jahren. In den 50er-Jahren war der Imja Gletscher von einer dicken Eisschicht dedeckt. Dickes eis fällt vom Berg und vermischt sich mit dem Lhotse Shat Gletscher, der ein wenig weiter unten liegt. Damals defanden sich im und um den Gletscher herum noch kleine Schmelzwasserseen. In den darauffolgenden fünfzig Jahren wurden diese Seen immer Großer und verschmolzen miteinander. Auf diese Weise entstand Mitte der 70er-Jahre der Imjasee. Une épaisse formation de glace glisse de la montagne et le gracier fusionne avec celui du Lhotse Shar, plus bas. Même dans les années 50 on pouvait observer, à l'intérieur et autour du glacier, des marres d'eaux provenant de la fonte du glacier.
