Nederlands: Fabrieksgebouw van voormalige katoenspinnerij UCO Desmet-Guequier, gelegen tussen de Minnemeers en Oudevest in Gent. In 1905 bouwt de firma Desmet-Guequier een fabriek in de architecturale stijl van de Engelse katoenspinnerijen. De sheddaken en de grote ramen geven een maximale lichtinval. Tot 1975 werken hier een honderdtal arbeiders en enkele bedienden. De fabriek heet in de volksmond UCO d’Oudevest, genoemd naar de straat waar de ingang van de fabriek ligt. Na de sluiting staat de site leeg tot de Stad Gent ze in 1982 aankoopt. Eerst komt het gebouw in het vizier als depotruimte voor het MIAT. Daarna besluit het stadsbestuur om het volledige museum in het pand onder te brengen. De aanpalende gebouwen van de vroeg-19e-eeuwse katoenspinnerij en de statige directeurswoning worden afgebroken, samen met de machinekamer en de typische schoorsteen. In 1994 wordt de nieuwe museumvleugel met onthaal, café en trappentoren feestelijk geopend. Zicht op het gebouw langs de Minnemeers. |
