The distance between Siena and Alexandria is 5000 stadia and at the midday summer solstice in Siena the sun struck the earth perpendicularly while in Alexandria it struck with an inclination of 7.2°. Therefore he decreased the circumference of the earth with the equivalence 7.2:360=5000:x |
