| Description |
English: The problem of squaring the circle is a historical problem of mathematics. It is a classic problem of Greek mathematics which aims to be able to construct, using only straightedge and compass, a square with the same area as a given circle. The impossibility of such a construction, with the limitations imposed by the exclusive use of ruler and compass, derives from the fact that π is a transcendent number, and therefore non-constructable (any construction would be only an approximation). In fact, the solution would require the construction of the square root of π (the areas of the two figures would be equal if and only if the side of the square was equal to the square root of π) |
