Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This is the story of Hippasus of Metapontum, the disciple of Pythagoras who dared go against his master's teachings: Pythagoras believed that every number could be written as a fraction of coprime numbers, but Hippasus was able to expose the flaws of his theory through the Pythagorean theorem and a rectangle triangle with the catheti measuring 1 unit. Hippasus realized that the hypotenuse measured √2, a number that cannot be written as a fraction. The master hated to be contradicted, so he sent Hippasus away from his school and faked his death to prevent the spread of his discover.
