The fol-lowing year it was given at Irving Place Theatre,New York, and four years later in English as Chil-dren of the King. Humperdinck composed the music for the play in1895-96. The introductions to Acts II and III werefarrar as the goose girl produced at a concert of the Bach Society in Heidel- berg, June 2, 1896, the composer conducting. HUMPERDINCK AND THE BERLIN CAST Berlin and Leipsic before the play was produced. Introduction to Act II was played at theMontauk Theatre, Brooklyn, November 22, 1896, at a concert of the Brooklyn Saengerbund,and in December both introductions were given in Boston by the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The opera is allegorical in character, illustrating the stupidity of mankind in failing torecognize true loyalty when it appears to them in disguise. It is a human little story, full ofpathos, humor and tenderness, and no one could have given it the gentle, sympathetic touchbetter than Humperdinck. The story tells of a GooseGirl who lives with an oldWitch in the hills above thetown of Hellabrunn. Apoorly-dressed youth comesout of the woods and tells theGoose Girl of his wanderings.He is in reality the Kings Son,but the girl does not knowthis. The boy falls in lovewith the beautiful maiden,and asks her to go mayingwith him through the summerland. The girl longs to runoff with him, but finds he
