Description |
Nederlands: Uma is de gemalin van Shiva en wordt ook wel Dewi genoemd. Zij is de trouwe echtgenote en staat voor de scheppende kracht. Zij is het symbool van reinheid en mensen van Bali geven haar dan ook veelal een witte kleur, terwijl zij haar vereren als meergodin (Dewi Danu) of als Giriputri (bergprinses) of umaganggi (watergeefster). De Hindoe's beelden haar af met attributen: lotus, vliegenwaaier. Op Bali heeft zij het uiterlijk van een prinses. Uma als Dewi is de heerseres over de rijst op de niet bevloeide gronden, in tegenstelling tot Dewi Sri (de echtgenote van Wisnu), die de natte rijstvelden beheerst. De volksoverlevering noemt als de godin van de niet bevloeide gronden echter ook de dochter van Batara Guru (Shiva). Het hoofddeksel der goden en priesters (gelung candi) onderscheidt haar van Saraswati en Laksmi (Sri), doch afzonderlijke attributen, welke haar eigen plaats in het Hindoe-pantheon zouden kunnen aanduiden, ontbreken overigens bij dit beeld.
Dit beeld behoort tot een groep van 28 beelden (15-156 t/m 15-182b), gezamenlijk een pantheon van Balinese godheden vormend, dat getoond werd op de Nederlandse koloniale afdeling op de wereldtentoonstelling te Parijs in 1900. Speciaal voor deze tentoonstelling heeft C.M. Pleyte, conservator van 's Rijks Etnografisch Museum in Leiden, deze beelden op Bali laten vervaardigen.
