Description Horatio Gates Stevens (1778–1873), the elder son of Ebenezer Stevens and his first wife, Rebecca (Hodgdon) Stevens. He was named after General Horatio Gates, his father's superior officer, who became his godfather at a christening ceremony at the Continental Army camp in New Windsor, New York, late in 1778. He was major general of the New York State militia and vice-president of the New York State Society of the Cincinnati.
