Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Linen-backed engraving of "Honolulu as seen from the foot of Puaoaina - Punchbowl Hill" (Puowaina, Punch Bowl Crater), 1837, with inset of Female Seminary, Wailuku. 1 art print : engraving, b&w ; 33 x 53 cm.

Nathan Van Patten, wrote in Early Native Engravers of Hawaii (1926):

This is one of the earliest views of Honolulu, which at this time consisted of a rambling assemblage of native buildings with a fringe of more pretentious buildings of American type along the water-front. There is one church visible and to be distinguished by its steeple, also two large buildings each with a flagstaff and flags flying therefrom. Several sailing ships are in the harbor, and a nest of masts looms up from behind a group of larger buildings near the head of the bay. Very little vegetation is shown in this plate. There are two groups of palms beside the shore. At the left center are two oddly drawn prancing horses with riders and a native burden-carrier.
