Summary[edit]

Description

Just a block away from Anne Frank House (where I am heading as my first Amsterdam sight), I am greeted by this pink granite triangle on a canal.

Homomonument was erected to remember the gay victims of the Holocaust. The Nazi Germans, who marched into the Netherlands early on, wanted to exterminate "undesirable" people for a number of reasons; homosexuality was one of them, and homosexuals were identified on their concentration camp uniforms by a pink triangle.

Amsterdam around the turn of the millennium wanted to put out a much more tolerant image; it had hosted Gay Games, and would become the first place in the world to extend full marriage equality to same-sex couples in another year. However, it was seeing a lot of backlash - primarily from the city's growing ranks of Muslim immigrants who come from cultures/countries where being gay is still a criminal (maybe even capital) offense.

The Muslim immigrants, particularly young male thugs, more or less ensured that Amsterdam would be the most miserable destination I would ever have the misfortune of visiting. Coming from California where Korean and Central American Christian immigrants were working on their own ways of criminalizing homosexuality (they would succeed with Proposition 22 in 2000, which would be overthrown via court order in 2008 but restored shortly thereafter with Proposition 8), this was the absolute last thing I needed in my travel destination.
