Deutsch: Mit etwa 4.100 Hektar Gesamtfläche liegen im Hohen Venn die größten Naturschutzgebiete Belgiens. Seit 1992 sind dort Moore und Heiden sehr streng geschützt. In zahlreichen Beschreibungen werden die beeindruckenden, weiten, unbesiedelten Flächen der Hochebene als "unberührte Natur", als "wild", "natürlich" oder "intakt" bezeichnet. Der Schein trügt. Auch das Hohe Venn ist eine Kulturlandschaft mit vom Menschen verursachten Störungen und Veränderungen.
Nach dem Ende der letzten Eiszeit, vor etwa 7500 Jahren, begann die Entstehung der Hochmoore. Durch ständiges Wachstum und Teilverrottung der Pflanzen, insbesondere der Torfmoose, bildeten sich mächtige Torfschichten auf ausgedehnten Flächen. Von den ursprünglichen Moorgebieten, die sich einmal auf etwa 1000 Hektar erstreckt haben, sind heute nur noch etwa hundert Hektar weitgehend vom Menschen unbeeinflusst. (naturpark-eifel.de) |
