Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Hogweed (Heracleum sphondylium) Hogweed is a stout upright plant (60-180cm) with a ridged stem and deeply lobed crinkled leaves and many small clustered flat white flowers. It gained its name because in the past it was gathered for pig fodder. It contains a substance that can cause blistering. This is a successful roadside herb and can compete with the luxuriant nettles, docks and thistles as they gobble up the run-off from fields saturated with nitrates and phosphates. This photograph shows the flower head just before it opens.
