I have no desire to waste my days and nights in anxious thoughtas to how the West End shall be preserved from this hostile legisla-tion ; and even if it were different, it would be impossible for theWest End Company to undertake to raise this money under theexisting condition of things; and I cannot bring this too plainlybefore the commission, if they desire to have this work done. If the city desires to undertake this work,so far as the West End Company is concerned, it has no objection.But it seems to me that the carrying out of this plan, the furtherextension of this transportation system into the eight-mile limit,and then as time goes on, into the twelve-mile limit can be doneultimately by the West End Company, if the state and the city willstrengthen its hands in the manner I have indicated. Make secure, absolutely secure, the money which the commumitydesires to have invested in this project, and thus the company canobtain it at the cheapest rate.
