We are not informed how long some of these who becamemembers of the Church of the Brethren sojourned atSchwarzenau before the formation of a definite series ofdoctrines, and a formal organization at the baptism. With-out doubt they were there for some years, as we know manyremained there for some years after the organizing, and thusSchwarzenau became an important center of definite relig-ious activity. Under these favorable external religiousconditions noted, and of saving grace, and living lives ofprayer and Bible study, and living practical Christianity incharity to the poor, we may well hope the Brethren are wellequipped for the awful experiences that were awaiting them.We leave for a time, therefore, the mother church, andnotice the spread of the new denomination in other parts,and the dark clouds rapidly forming, that indicated all tooclearly the terrific storm of persecution soon to break uponGods faithful ones.

CHAPTER II. OTHER CHURCHES ORGANIZED. Spread of the New Denomination. While the mother church at Schwarzenau continued to bethe most important center throughout, it will be rememberedthat the Brethren soon carried the gospel doctrines far andwide, and the new denomination spread with remarkablerapidity. Of this period of growth Alexander Mack says:After this evidence of their love to God, by obeying hiscommand they were powerfully strengthened and encour-aged to bear testimony for the truth in their public meetings,to which the Lord added his blessing, and believers weremore and more obedient, so that in the short space of sevenyears their society became numerous, not only at Schwarze-nau, but also in various places in the Palatinate. A societywas likewise formed at Marienborn, to which the awakenedfrom the Palatinate attached themselves, for in endeavoringto form a society for themselves, they were persecuted andbanished. And even at Marienborn their external privilegeswere soon blas
