THE BARONY OF CARNEGIE. XX111 period before it came into their hands, they bore the name of Balinhard,assumed from lands belonging to them in the parish of Arbirlot, nearArbroath. The early history of the family is involved in much obscurity, owing, ina great measure, to the destruction of the charters and records at Kinnaird,when the house was burnt in the year 1452.1 Sufficient evidence, however, has been preserved, in a charter by King-David II.—without date, but probably granted in 1358,—confirming adonation made by the then deceased Walter Maule, to John de Balinhard—afterwards de Carnegie—of the lands of Carnegie, to prove that fourvenerations of the familv bore the surname of Balinhard. An abstract ofthis document is given in the notice of the Balinhards of that ilk.2 In the county of Forfar there are, at least, three places of the name ofBalinhard, besides another called Balindarg, perhaps a variation of the samecompound word, Baile-an-aird, town or village on the heig
