War Veterans, and the Masonic fraternity, belonging to Harmony Lodge,No. 43. F. & A. M., which is the oldest Masonic lodge of the Naugatuck valley and ofwhich he has been secretary for several years. He has also attained the Knight Templardegree in Masonry and he is an Odd Fellow and an Elk. He has been a member of thegrievance committee of the New Haven county bar for ten years. He belongs to theFirst Congregational church and in politics he is a republican, taking a most active andhelpful interest in promoting the welfare and success of his party. For ten years hewas chairman of the republican city central committee and for the past eight years hasbeen a member of the republican state committee. From 1906 until 1914 he served asprosecuting attorney for the district court of Waterbury. oi for two terms of four yearseach, making a most excellent record in that position. He was born inStirling, Scotland, May 15. 1851, a son of John and Catherine (Dunsmore) McAlpine. Thefather Avas a tailor by trade and spent his entire life in Scotland. Avhere lie passed awayin 1863.
