He was reelectedto the Forty-second and Forty-third Congresses, andagain in 1874 was elected to Congress as well as to theForty-ninth Congress, after which he retired, and inNew York City embarked in railroad enterprises. Whilein Congress he conceived the idea of making Pittsburgha deep water harbor and obtained the first appropriationfor this purpose. He also aided Ohio river and otherriver and harbor enterprises. He was largely interestedin Mexican railway building. At one time he was presi-dent of the Union National League of America; mem-ber of the Grand Army of the Republic; Scott Legion;Masonic fraternity; National Board of Steam Naviga-tion ; Shipping League, etc., holding official places in all.Pittsburgh will long remember his work in securing theappropriation for the Davis Island Dam.
