sound money parade of that year; Mr.Young served as chief of staff for the parade. In 1900 Mr. Young organizedand was Colonel of the Republican Spanish-American War Veteran Regiment;was vice-president and member of the Managing Committee of the McKinleyClub No. 1, and a member of the Executive Committee of the Business MensSound Money Association. Mr. Young also assisted in the organization of theCommercial, Industrial and Sound Money Parade, and was its chief marshal. In 1890, when the National Guards Regiments were increased from eightto twelve companies, Mr. Young organized Company H, First Infantry, andwas commissioned Captain of this company, retiring at the end of his term in1893. He re-entered the National Guard service in 1896, as Major of the newlyorganized State Cavalry Squadron, composed of three troops, an additional troopbeing added in 1897. When the Spanish War broke out, Mr. Young organizedthe First Cavalry, Illinois Volunteers, at Chicago; was accepted and ordered 688

689 to report for duty at Springfield, April 26, i8q8 ; was mustered into the UnitedStates service as Colonel of this regiment. May 21; ordered to Chattanoogawith his regiment, and remained there until August 25 when the war havingbeen concluded and peace declared they were ordered to Fort Sheridan, 111., andmustered out October 11, 1898. In 1899 a bill was passed forming a regimentof cavalry. Illinois Xational Guard, which Mr. Young organized and was com-missioned Colonel by Governor Tanner; this position he now holds. Mr. Young has been a conspicuous figure in connection with many of ihepublic enterprises of Chicago during the last few years. He was Chief of Staffat the dedication of the Logan monument. He took a prominent part in thePeace Jubilee in 1898; and in the Fall Festival and celebration attending thelaying of the corner-stone of the Chicago Postoffice in 1899; and served as amember of the Executive Committee for the entertainment of the G.
