At the close of his fifth term inCongress he was appointed Director of the Mint, and held this position untilafter the inauguration of Cleveland in 1885. For his statistical work whileDirector of the Mint he was elected member of the International StatisticalInstitute. He then returned to his home at Freeport and resumed the practiceof law. Mr. Burchard was a member of the commission appointed bv GovernorOglesby to revise the revenue laws of the State, and since the completion ofthis duty his time has been occupied with professional and private business atFreeport. except in 1893. when he had the supervision of the Bureau of Awardsin the Mines and Mining Departments at the Worlds Fair, and in 1900 wasSupervisor of the Census for the Third District of Illinois. On May 15. 1861. Mr. Burchard was married to Jane Lawver of Lena, 111.Mrs. Burchard was educated in the Freeport schools and for a short time at 364

She was an accomplished lady and a devoted wife and mother.During the sixteen years her husband was a member of Congress and Directorof the Mint, she was with him at Washington, and accompanied him on histravels there and to other places. She died at Freeport, November 17, 1892.Their only child, Edward Lawver Burchard, was born June 5, 1867. He wasgraduated at Beloit College in 1891, and in July of that year was appointed byDirector General Davis stenographer and clerk, and afterward chief clerk, forthe department of Mines and Mining in the Worlds Columbian Exposition,which position he held until its close, when he became Librarian and Recorderfor the Field Columbian Museum. In 1897, upon competitive examination,taken by about eighty applicants in the principal cities of the United States, he,standing the highest, was appointed and now is chief of the division of Archivesand
