n, called upon Mr. Williams tofill the vacancy- Accordingly the latter delivered a strong speech, taking theopportunity to boom Mr. McKinley for the presidency. He was one of theorganizers and chairman of the finance committee of the William McKinlevBusiness Mens Club, which did such effective service during the McKinlevcampaign. At the Springfield Convention he was selected to second the speechof William J. Calhoun favoring the endorsement of McKinleys nomination, butin the excitement following certain parliamentary tactics all arguments werepassed over, the question put to a vote, and the speech was never delivered.He campaigned for the national committees in Indiana, Nebraska and Illinois,and was invited by Mr. McKinley to make a series of speeches in Ohio, but wasunable to accept. He helped organize the McKinley and Hobart NationalWheelmen, and was made vice-president of the organization. About 80,000wheelmen, a large percentage being first voters, were enrolled. He is an Episcopalian and resides inthe 32d ward, Chicago. He has a beautiful summer home at Lake Beulah, Wis.Mr. Williams wide scholarship, brilliant talents and fluent eloquence have wonfor him prominent reputation as an after-dinner speaker. He has performedimportant services in a great variety of public enterprises, and is prominentlyidentified with the public spirit of Chicago- HERMAN B. WICKERSHAM. Herman B.
