edu-cated in the public schools, and at the age of thirteen years, being ambitiousto learn a trade, engaged with Field & Keep, manufacturing jewelers, at New-ark, X. J. His pay during the time of his indenture was $2.25 per week for boardand S25 per annum for clothing, payable quarterly. By working overtime fivenights each week he earned sufficient for all necessaries and was contented. Byattending strictly to business and adhering to the rules of the establishment,Mr. Hyde obtained the good will of his employers, so that when the paniccame in 1857. and all business was supended, young Hyde was retained andgiven general charge of the almost idle plant. During this period he slept inthe building and guarded the interests entrusted to his care so faithfully andwell that soon after the reopening of the factory he was given his full time andmade assistant superintendent over one hundred and fifty employes, a very re-sponsible position for one who had not yet reached his majority. 704
