the subject of his candidacy forthe Senate. In 1856 Air. Henderson was elected to the State Senate, and votedfor Abraham Lincoln for the United States Senate against Stephen A. Douglasin 1859. In 1861 Governor Yates tendered Air. Henderson a position on theCommission for Auditing Alilitary Accounts. He qualified, but found the dutiesrequired too much of his time and resigned. In 1802 a number of companies of volunteers were raised in the counties ofHenry and Stark, one of them by Air. Henderson; the men elected him to bethe regiment. He was much surprised by this action, andwas reluctant to assume the responsibility of commanding a regiment,as he had had no previous military experience, but he acceptedthe situation, was commissioned Colonel of the ri2th Illinois Volunteers■ vernor Yates, and was mustered into the tFnited States service at Peoria,September 2_ _ (.
