in the city. In April, 1861, when the Civil War began, and Fort Sumpter fell, Mr.Adams and his brother enlisted in Battery A, Illinois Light Artillery. Uponleaving the service he became a teacher in the Chicago High School, studyinglaw at the same time. In 1864 he entered Dane Law School of Harvard Uni-versity, graduating in 1865. He returned home to Chicago well equipped forthe important affairs of a busy life in a great city; he began the practice of lawand continued this with success until the great fire in 1871. The rebuilding ofChicago opened up a new field for Mr. Adams. The care and improvement ofreal estate required and occupied his attention, and he has been devoting him-self largely to this business for more than twenty-eight years. It can be saidthat by heredity and environment Mr. Adams has a natural bent for literatureand art; he is fond of books, has read much and is well versed in the bestliterature of the world.
