Ocean. During Mr. Nixons long connection with the newspaper world he neverbecame a candidate for public office, contenting himself with advocating theclaims of others for office instead of his own. When William McKinley waselected President the friends of Mr. Nixon believed that the time had comethat there should be a proper recognition of the valuable services which hehad rendered to to the country and to the Republican party bv appointing himto the most important office in the gift of the President at Chicago. In duecourse Mr. Nixons name was presented for the office of Collector of the Port.The President knew Mr. Nixon well, recognized his ability, his integrity, hisfidelity to every trust, and his thorough fitness for this office, and gladly ap-pointed him Collector of the Port of Chicago. This office Mr. Nixon now holds;he has thoroughly familiarized himself with every duty, and the business of thegovernment and the people is being conducted with promptness and intelligence. 292
