By the deathof Mr. Mason the burden of self-support was thrown upon his son William E.Mason, who faced the situation with courage and confidence. He soon securedemployment as a school teacher, and for three years devoted himself earnestlyto this work, carrying on his studies at the same time. In 1869 he was employedas a teacher in the public schools of Des Moines, continuing this employmentfor two years more. The time had now come when he was to carry out a long-cherished plan—that of studying law. He entered, as a student, the law office of Hon. ThomasH. Withrow, a gentleman of high standing in the profession, and eminent as acorporation lawyer. Soon after Mr. Mason entered the office Mr. Withrow wasappointed General Solicitor of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad,and removed to Chicago, whither Mr. Mason accompanied him. 275 ing one year with Mr. Withrow, Mr. Mason entered the office of Hon. JohnM. Jewett. where he finished his preparatory studies for admission to the bar.He remained several years in the law office of Mr. Tewett. but in 1877 he formeda law partnership with Judge M. R. M. Wallace, and began the practice of lawon his own account. The firm secured a large practice, which brought Mr.Mason prominently before the courts and the public. He soon established thereputation of being safe in counsel, a good lawyer in the preparation and trialof a case, and an advocate of great eloquence and ability. Later Mr. Masonestablished die law firm of Mason & Ennis. He has been engaged in the prose-cution and the defense of many important lawsuits, and his reputation as a mostcompetent and forceful lawyer is well known in Chicago.
