On the homestead farm near Ottumwa, Wapellocounty, Iowa, Joseph T. Pence was born on thepth of November, 1869, and he is a representative ofone of the honored pioneer families of that state.His father, William Pence, was a native of Pennsyl-vania and the lineage is traced back to the staunchGerman stock that became prominent in connectionwith the earliest settlement and development of theold Keystone state. Will; am Pence was a boy at thetime of the family removal from Pennsylvania to thewilds of Iowa, in 1839, and the journey to the newhome was made overland, with teams and wagon.The family endured the full tension of hardships andtrials incidental to the pioneer epoch and aided mater-ially in the civic and industrial development of Iowa,where they were numbered among the earliest set-tlers.
