There are many names ofeminence connected with Fresnos fraternity, among whom the well knowncity attorney of Fresno, Edgar Snowden Van Meter, has made a name forhimself. A descendant of one of the old Knickerbocker families of New York,who in earlv days moved to Virginia, he was born in that state, August 1,1850. at Morefieid, Hardy County, in what is now West Virginia, and whentwo years old crossed the plains in a wagon with his parents, who removedto Illinois, at that time almost a frontier state, with its rich plains compara-tively sparsely settled. Death claimed the father of the family while livingin Illinois, where they remained until Edgar was five years old, when theyreturned to Virginia. Educational facilities were far difterent in those days from the advan-tages enjoyed by children at the present time, and young Edgar received hiseducation in the old brick church, which served as both school house andchurch. At the age of seventeen he taught school, and studiously inclined,

HISTORY OF FRESNO COUNTY 1115 read law, studied history and the Bible. In 1870, when twenty years of age,he went to Illinois and for three years was on a farm in Piatt County, in themeantime studying law and teaching school. He reaped the fruit of his in-dustry when he was admitted to the bar at Springfield, Illinois, January 1,1877. For ten years he practiced law successfully in Clinton and Blooming-ton, III. He was city clerk of Clinton, district attorney of De Witt Countyand also deputy county clerk of that county. In 1888 he came to California,locating in Fresno where he has built a Uicratixe practice, and in 1890-91was appointed deputy district attorney under W. D. Tupper. In May, 1917,Mayor \^^illiam F. Tooney appointed him city attorney of Fresno, a positionhe is ably filling. Mr. Van Meter has been twice married. His first wife, in maidenhoodCarrie Summers, a native of Michigan, died in 1900.
