At 11 oclock on the morning of November 20th we crossed into Belgiumat the village of Aubange. A crowd of civilians lined the road, the town wasbedecked with allied flags and a banner stretched across the road containedthe words Honneur aux Allies. The children shouted Vive LAmeriqueand an old lady handed out several basketsful of apples, which we enjoyedvery much. This same enthusiasm and hospitality was displayed by the Bel-gians in each village through which we passed. That night we stopped atGuerlange, a quaint little town where we enjoyed the homely hospitality ofthe people who probably suffered most at the hands of the invading army.We were the first soldiers through this section and as the army of delivery,American at that, after four years of German occupation, too much honorcould not be paid us.
