Y. 68 Saratoga which they had so recently burned, Burgoynesurrendered his sword to General Gates.Along the road, just across the Fishkill, theAmerican army stretched in two lines, betweenwhich the disarmed prisoners were marched tothe shrill notes of the fife and the measuredbeat of the drum, to the tune of YankeeDoodle, played for the first time as a nationalair. General Schuyler, the hospitable and mag-nanimous, was on the ground. Neither theslight he had received from Congress nor theinjuries inflicted on him by the British couldquench his generous nature. He rejoicedwith his victorious countrymen, he sympathizedwith the fallen enemy, he protected and caredfor the helpless women. During the summer of 1777 he had cut aroad from his farm at old Saratoga throughthe wilderness to the High Rock Spring,already famous for its medicinal properties.He built a small frame
