Fashionimmediately took them up, and water was spouting every where ;Oo place was complete without a fountain, and the first recom-mendation of the tasteful towards the embellishment of a garden,court, walk, or alley, was certainly place a fountain there.—Rutin art, as in matters of less importance, it frequently happens^that fashion encroaches upon, or supercedes the more steady pa-tronage oifitness and propriety ; and in her vacillating progress,adopts or discards, equally without reflection ; and, in her dis-missal, the subject, which was hitherto her pride and boast,becomes as obnoxious to her distaste. As in other cases where fashion predominates, its fulness pro-duced its fall;—their absurd adoption in most instances, withthe incessant repetition of them, occasioned satiety and disgust,consequently they were demolished with as little regard to fine

Time has now banished the impression that was fatal tosuch designs, and their beauties are again proper subjects forgarden embellishment, when circumstances permit an unforceduse of them. Water is rarely otherwise than desirable; and themotion and sound of lightly-falling water gives liveliness to aspot however secluded, that is not readily obtained in itsabsence. To execute the proposed fountains it is necessary to be in pos-session of a body of water at a sufficient height to produce thejet, and it must be something higher than the altitude pro-posed, because of the resistance the jet meets with, and amongstothers, from the pressure of the air, and in striking against itsdescending waters: the aperture at which the water escapesmu^ be proportioned to the height of the reservoir, and to thediameter of the conducting pipes.
