Virginia-Born Henry Day, 70, Financier, Dies. New York; July 14, 1957 (Associated Press) Henry M. Day, 70, financier and former associate of oil tycoon Harry F. Sinclair, died yesterday at his Park Avenue home. In the 1920s, Day was a vice president of the Sinclair Exploration Co. and served as an oil scout for Sinclair. In 1929 he served a four-month jail term for contempt of court for hiring private detectives to shadow members of the jury which was hearing a case in connection with the Teapot Dome oil scandal. Sinclair also was found guilty of contempt. Born at Smithfield, Virginia, Day began his career in the import-export business and traveled extensively seeking oil concessions. At one time he was credited with holding Russian concessions worth millions in oil, manganese, tobacco and flax. In recent years, he served as industrial consultant to Owens-Illinois Glass Co., Owens-Corning Fibreglass Co., and the George A. Fuller Construction Co. Day was born in Smithfield in 1887. He was the son of Henry Mason Day Sr. and Emily Garnett Day. He was descended from old and distinguished Virginia families on both sides. Although he lived outside Virginia for many years, he always remained steadfast in his love for Virginia and Virginian things. In May, 1953, he was appointed president of the historic St. Luke's Restoration. From that time on he was indefatigable in his efforts to save the historic church for coming generations. His enthusiasm and consecration to the project spread until the fund goal was reached and the church was restored to its 17th century appearance. Survivors include his wife. Mrs. Caroline Fagan Day; a brother, Colonel Lee Garnett Day, and a sister, Miss Emie Sutton Day. Funeral services will be held at noon today at St. Thomas in New York. The remains will arrive at Bullock Funeral Home, Smithfield. Tuesday morning and will be taken to St. Lukes Church for services at 11 a.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Works copyrighted before 1964 had to have the copyright renewed sometime in the 28th year. If the copyright was not renewed, the work is in the public domain. No renewal notice was found for this periodical for issues published in this year. For instance, the first New York Times issue renewed was from April 1, 1928. Some publications may have renewed an individual article from an earlier time, for instance the New York Times renewed at least one article published on January 9, 1927. If you find any contrary evidence, or the renewal database has been updated, please notify me. No renewal notices have been found for articles supplied by the Associated Press to subscribing newspapers.
