Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Henry L. Schwartz House, 406 Linwood Avenue, Buffalo, New York, May 2021. A work of Charles Day Swan, the design is an early (1887) and particularly exquisite example of the architect's favored Queen Anne style, with a bevy of fine detailing: a projecting gable undergirded by oversized modillions and ornate end brackets and punctuated by a sextet of leaded-glass windows with geometric tracery, a handsome stained-glass window in the recessed portion of the second-story façade, an asymmetrical pedimented front porch whose shed roof is supported by Doric columns, a three-story projecting bay window and second-floor oriel on the north side elevation. This was originally the home of Henry L. Schwartz (1858-1904), one of the most prominent names in Buffalo's legal circles of the day, a partner in the law firm of Baker, Schwartz & Drake, specializing in bankruptcy. Two years after he and his wife moved out of the house seen here and into the Hotel Lenox, Schwartz met his end as the victim of a murder-suicide that made national news: Hugh A. Knowles, a client who was reportedly dissatisfied with the handling of the dissolution of his business as well as the disposition of his late wife Kate's estate, cornered Schwartz in his office at the Marine Bank Building and shot him dead, then turned the gun on himself about fifteen minutes later while police were attempting to apprehend him.
