Description De Helsluis is de verbinding tussen de rivier de Beneden Merwede en het riviertje het Wantij via de Helsloot. Het Wantij is een riviertje wat tussen het eilandje De Staart en het eiland van Dordrecht loopt. Doordat het riviertje van stroom opwaarts naar stroom afwaarts loopt verloopt het eb en vloed hier averechts. Op de grote open Oude Maas en Nieuwe en Beneden Merwede was het eerder vloed dan in het beknepen riviertje Het Wantij. Eer het vloed was in het Wantij was het al weer eb op de grote rivieren. Dit leidde tot zeer gevaarlijke stromingen en draaikolken. Vandaar de naamstelling "Het Wan_tij" Sedert de Deltawerken en sluizen is dit bijna verleden tijd. De naam Helsluis en Helsloot geeft nog aan hoe het er hier vroeger aan toe ging. Verdrinkingen kwamen hier ook regelmatig voor.
