[edit]DescriptionHelping families cope with future food disasters in Kenya (8046799944).jpg |
A family gather in Loiturerei village, Kenya. This region in the Turkana province to the north of the country is an extremely arid area, where up to one in three children were malnourished at the height of the devastating drought last year. On a visit to the area, Development Secretary Justine Greening made a pledge to target aid that will help prevent future food disasters across the Horn of Africa. Ms Greening also announced a new package of UK aid to treat thousands more children and women who continue to suffer from malnutrition across the Turkana region. Through the aid announced by the Development Secretary today, Britain will: - help treat a further 65,000 acutely malnourished children in Kenya every year for the next three years - provide care to prevent malnutrition for 400,000 women and children and - strengthen the resilience of the local health systems to prevent, prepare and respond quickly to future nutrition emergencies.
