Summary[edit]

Description

This photo was taken in November 2013 during our trek to Everest Base Camp through Gokyo. When we were passing Everest View Hotel (located at about 3880m, just above Namche Bazaar village), we saw an old man being evacuated by a helicopter due to altitude sickness.

That hotel is a popular place among tourists and many of them get there by a helicopter, flying from the nearest airport in Lukla (2700m), avoiding slow and steady ascent which helps acclimatisation. Helicopter is a certainly faster and easier way to get there, especially for old people but unfortunately it can lead to AMS. Poor man was so weak that he couldn't get to the helicopter by himself.

Along the route we saw a couple of other old people being helped to get down (usually they are sitting on a back of a local variety of a mule), probably due to AMS symptoms as well.

For those who live in Europe and travel to Himalaya for the first time it can be shocking how difficult can it be to escape these places. Even on Everest Base Camp trek, which is one of the most popular treks in the world, you have to walk from 3 to 6 hours every day to cover the distance between villages. If something goes wrong, for example you've got altitude sickness symptoms, the only way to get help is to descend down. Even helicopters cannot be relied upon as the weather conditions may not be permitting them to fly.
