English: Heinzelmännchen

Record number: 23060707 Artist: Herrfurth, Oskar (German, 1862-1934) Item caption, front: Item caption/descriptive text, back: 1. = How comfortable it used to be in Cologne, when elves did all the work. If one was lazy, he'd just lie down on the sleeping bench without a care. And before the slacker woke the next morning, his day's work was already finished! While the carpenters stretched out on the wood chips, a host of little folk came and took care of what needed to be done. Uniform title: Dimensions: 141 x 91 mm. Date: 1926 or earlier Nationality: German Publisher: Verlag: Farbenphotographische Gesellschaft m.b.H., Stuttgart, [Germany] Series: Serie 363 Nr. 5134 Medium: Uvachrom color print from original watercolor painting Interpretive notes: The text on this card is excerpted from a poem in verse written in 1836 by August Kopisch (1799-1853) about the elves (or brownies) of Köln (Cologne). According to legend, these friendly little people came out at night to perform work for the citizens, who could then take life easy during their waking hours. The illustration shows the Heinzelmännchen as builders, assembling scaffolding for a construction project while the carpenters are fast asleep. Subject headings: Elves
