Summary[edit]

Description
English: This figure provides calculations for the height of distant object (in this case, an island) visible above the horizon to an observer (in this case, on a boat). Measurements are given in feet and miles. An example is given for an observer on a boat (ho) with eye level of 12 feet above sea level, to an island 130 feet above sea level (h2), 15 miles away (do) from observer. Earth's radius is assumed to be 3,960 miles.
