Rôle des egoyomi :
Les egoyomi comme celui-ci sont des estampes-calendriers destinées à indiquer quels sont les mois longs de l'année à venir. Destinés à de riches collectionneurs, les egoyomi sont réalisés de façon luxueuse, et sont présentés sous forme de mitate (parodies de célèbres contes chinois ou japonais).
Les mois longs de l'année (c'est le rôle d'un egoyomi de les faire apparaître, un peu dissimulés) sont cachés dans l' obi de la jeune femme.
Analyse de la mitate :
Shôki - outre son rôle de tueur de démon dans la mythologie chinoise - était également connu pour s'adonner à l'enlèvement de jeunes femmes, comme on le voit ici.
La mitate est ici assez complexe à décrypter, puisque l'attitude des deux personnages est également une allusion au célèbre épisode de la fuite sur la lande de Musashi des deux amants des Contes d'Ise (représenté également par Utamaro, Sugimura Jihei, Shunsho...).
De plus, le style de l'estampe est composite, puisque Shôki est représenté dans le style Kano, alors que la jeune fille est purement ukiyo-e.
Exemplaire de l'estampe :
L'exemplaire montré ici se trouve au musée Guimet, et fait partie du leg d'Isaac de Camondo, en 1912. La taille précise de cet exemplaire est de 26,7 cm x 19,6cm.
