Title
harness pendant (plan)
Description
English: Cast copper alloy heraldic harness pendant, shield-shaped in plan, with a rectangular suspension mount that still retains its two rivets. The face of the shield has a pattern of four alternating pronounced and recessed horizontal waves with bulbous projections or 'nebuly' (from the Latin nebula or cloud) defined by four incised lines running horizontally across the shield. The surface is quite corroded but still has evidence of enameling in the form of the blackened recessed squares alternating with those with a more green patina. The enamel may have been red on a background of possibly gold or silver. The back of the shield is plain but most of the original surface is missing. The mount is bevelled slightly as it tapers towards the suspension loop and the rivets are square in section.

Without a canton (a square charge which is a diminutive of the Quarter) in the top left corner of the shield, it is impossible to be sure which family is represented. But the heraldic pattern like this one of six horizontal wavy bars alternating in gold and red, or 'barry nebuly of six or and gules' has been associated with the families of John Lovell or Philip Bassett (Mills, 1999, 64, No.NM.170). Philip Bassett (1185-1271) was Justiciar of England, or the chief minister under Henry III, and owned the manor of Wycombe in Buckinghamshire. The Bassett family of Tehidy in Cornwall is well known as they owned mines and land around the county, but before establishing themselves at Tehidy, near Camborne, they lived in Probus and St Enoder, which are close to the findspot. Their modern coat of arms and crest consists of four alternating wavy lines of gold and red which appears to have come originally from a similar crest of barry undy of six argent and gules of Nicoll de Bathe / Bassett of Somerset in the 13th century.

Pascoe (1979) illustrates, on the cover, and describes the arms of the Basset family of Tehidy as 'Barry wavy of six Or and Gu' on page 18.

Cherry in Saunders (1991) illustrates a similar shield-shaped pendant with alternating wavy vertical lines (three pales wavy or) on page 24, Fig.1, No.4 which is dated from the 14th century.

Clark (2004) illustrates a similar suspension mount on page 69, Fig.52, No.76, which is dated from the 14th century.
